STREAM LIFE!
STREAM LIFE! / Å VIL LIV is a site-specific sensory, audience-engaging performance walk in the forest and along a stream, about the ecological state of Danish streams, about their straightening, re-meandering, and the lack thereof. About streams as an allegory for choosing one’s life path—winding or straight—about making one’s choices, about walking the straight or the crooked road.
A stream that flows through the landscape will, over time, naturally begin to meander. Sense the stream in a small group, choose the straightened or the winding stream as your life path, and become part of the landscape. Meet performers and singers along the way at four scene stations—by the stream, in the stream, along the stream, or where the stream is gone or has completely disappeared… a tribute to all the streams that are still forced to run straight, held tightly on a leash…
“The birds are gone, the fish are gone,” said Minister of the Environment Christian Christensen (KrF) in 1982, after Danish streams in the 1960s had been straightened into rigid lines. Excess water from agriculture quickly found its way into nature, carrying with it large amounts of slurry, fertilizer, phosphorus, and nitrogen from the fields. Substances that then, as now, destroy, suffocate, and kill life in lakes, streams, the sea, and the groundwater. The 2003 Water Environment Plan was meant to ensure that the next generation could drink the water, swim in the sea, and catch fish in the lakes. Large parts of the Skjern River were re-meandered and restored to their original winding form, but far from all streams received this improvement.

“The performance leaves its mark on us. It turns us into slightly more conscious beings of nature, who not only plough and sow, but also nourish and honour. To such a degree, in fact, that people turn around in the street to stare at us after the performance. This is probably due above all to the face paint we had applied in the final scene…”
